Bask in the learning of Oxford; follow in the footsteps of students

On what was my last full excursion in Great Britain, I took the train from King’s Cross station into Oxford to see the university town. I had no idea what there was to see and was certainly glad to find a map which told me at least some of the colleges to find.

Setting off, I found myself in one of the most beautiful and lively town centers I had seen on my trip so far. The amount of bicycles and students walking to and from classes was nothing but astonishing.

I started my tour with Trinity College, a 16th century marvel complete with a striking chapel as well as a great hall. Then I traveled to the Bodleian Library, where I was disappointed to have to lock my video camera in a box. No photography allowed in Duke Humfrey’s Library.

Many will remember the central room, the Divinity School, from the Harry Potter movies as it doubled for the Infirmary wing where Harry got his bones re-grown and spent many long nights. As well, the incredible 15th century library was used in the films.

Next, my weary feet steered me off into the direction of Christ Church College where I toured the sprawling grounds as well as the cathedral. Alas, I was stymied at my chance to see the fantastic Great Hall because Michelle Obama was doing a private speech.

I’ll have to visit the hall, which has become known as the Hogwarts Great Hall, on another trip to Great Britain. Outside, I was scammed out of 10 Euros by a lady who said she needed money to see a midwife. Plus, I missed Tolkien’s grave; Oxford fail.
